STRATFORD CHORAL SOCIETY was founded in 1836 and thus shares with the Huddersfield Choral Society the distinction of jointly being among the oldest in Britain. Apart from short interludes during wartime, the Society has given regular concert performances in the Stratford Town Hall, Holy Trinity Church, the Shakespeare Memorial Theatre, Civic Hall and the Levi Fox Hall.
STRATFORD CHORAL SOCIETY

The choir presently numbers about a hundred amateur singers - sopranos, altos, tenor and basses - and has achieved a sound reputation in the region, offering audiences a varied repertoire of classical and contemporay music, some of the latter being specifically commissioned for the Society. The choir has sung in the first performances of Benjamin Britten's "War Requiem", "The Beatitudes" by Sir Arthur Bliss, "This Airy Day" by James Walker, Howard Goodall's "Let Us Be True to One Another" and Stephen Dodsworth's "Time's Glory".

CONDUCTOR: Stephen Dodsworth

COMMENTS FROM THE STRATFORD HERALD:

"Although the Stratford Choral Society, by providing consistent quality, has always enjoyed good support, it was heartening to observe standing room only. It has to be said that yet again the choir performance was of the highest standard ... first class intonation and really putting their backs into it" (Mozart's Requiem) "The choir was its usual supremely disciplined self putting real colour into changes of tempo and dynamics." (Mendelssohn's Elijah) "The Choral Society has a name for consistently producing top drawer performances. This performance was thoroughly enjoyable." (Haydn's Creation).
