Exquisitely picturesque - the second favourite Shakespearian property. Before marrying William Shakespeare in 1582, Anne Hathaway lived in what is justifiably described as one of England's most famous buildings. Part of the building dates from the mid-fifteenth century, and some of the furniture belonged to the Hathaways and their descendants. The garden is outstanding.

This property currently has no designated parking spaces or concessionary parking fares for Orange Badge holders. The parking fare is 3Op. This property is approached via a stone flagged path, which surrounds the house and its gardens. There is ample seating outside, and the gardens have mainly flat access, although one section is accessed via steps. Steps lead to the Ladies and Gents toilet facilities, situated at the front of the garden. The fully accessible toilet facilities are reached via the lawn area, adjacent to the upper coach park.
Four stone steps lead to the entrance of the house, which is entered through a low door. The house presents problems typically associated with an historic building, with uneven stone flooring on the ground floor, and uneven wooden flooring on the first floor. The ground floor itself comprises different levels of stone flagging.
A steep spiral wooden staircase leads to the first floor, and visitors should note the very low door frames and beams, and the changing levels of the floor. A flight of steep wooden steps with a handrail leads down to the ground floor which houses the exhibition, and provides flat access. A flight of steps leads to the gift shop, which allows ample room for circulation.
The property’s exit is via a turnstile: those unable to use this may leave through the main entrance. Shakespeare’s Tree Garden can be reached through a turnstile, or via a tarmac drive from Cottage Lane, if this is problematic.
From here, the pathway to the Thatch Restaurant and the Cottage Tea Garden has four steps at the bottom which lead to the road. Alternatively the Cottage Tea Garden can be reached from Cottage Lane. The restaurant allows entry to guide dogs. The interior is reached by two steps, but the tables outside are accessible by wheelchair. A steep ramp leads to the accessible toilet, situated in the garden. A sign states that Shottery Brook Walk is unsuitable for wheelchairs. The problems of access to the house are recognised by the staff, who are eager to assist wherever possible.
